Carter's Real Estate (Western Australia, Australia)

2004-07-31

I am a licenced real estate sales person. Today I visited a property which is to be auctioned on Saturday 14th August. I attended the home open as a private individual. I was attracted to the property for several reasons. The property in Hamilton Street, Bayswater is one which I have always admired and having read the advertisement which described the beautiful gardens I decided to visit the property. (I am a very keen gardener)

I was casually dressed and on arriving at the home open I introduced myself to a representative (one of three). "I am Craig Brosnan from (stated the name of my company). May I have a look through". The representative said yes, that would be o.k. and then asked me for a business card. Because I was casually dressed and not representing anyone other than myself I did not have a business card on my person. I said that I would get one for her from the car later.

During my inspection of the house I encountered another representative in the undercroft area who addressed me as "Trevor" and asked me what I thought of the house."It's Craig" I replied, however she didn't seem to register this. Later she again adressed me as Trevor. Because I was interested in the house (possibly a prospective purchaser) I went back upstairs to have a better look at the property.

While standing in the kitchen I was approached by an elderly gentleman (an acquaintance of mine) who coincidently was not only a previous owner of the house I was inspecting but also currently owns our former home in Glendower Street in Perth. He greeted me and asked me how I was. He then went on to say "I see you are not with (previous company) anymore, it's now become (new name of company)". "Yes" I replied. "Well" he said, "I guess it doesn't make any difference to you whether it's A or B, you just get on and do your job, don't you". "Yes" I said and then left that room to walk to the dining room. At this point I was accosted by the representative I had encountered downstairs. "I don't appreciate you spruiking (name of company) at my home open" she said. I was taken aback by this accusation and I replied that I was simply having a conversation with a gentleman who was a friend of mine. "No" she said, I heard that entire conversation from downstairs and I'm not happy about it, and I am going to ask you to leave the home open, and I would ask you to do it nicely please". Having no option I spoke to my friend and his daughter saying goodbye and that I had been asked to leave by the representative. At this point she said "no I didn't". I said "yes you did and you asked me to do it nicely please". Having said goodbye to my friends I then left.

Later I telephoned the gentleman with whom I had had the conversation and he apologised (not that he needed to) and confirmed that he was the only one who mentioned the name of my company/employer in that conversation and asked that this be made clear. I am very unhappy at the treatment I received as a possible prospective purchaser and would hope that an apology will be forthcoming.
