Barnes & Noble (Illinois, United States)

2011-11-11

I have ordered books both for my job & myself for 14 yrs+. I ordered a book which was supposed to be a one-time purchase. It turned out to be a book RENTAL. The company kept deducting large sums of money from my checking account & each time I called to ask why they gave me wrong information & assured me no further charges or problems would occur. I was even advised to close out my e-mail address, notify my bank & they assured me no further charges would occur because my account was closed. So last night I am charged the same large amount again. I called again & between 9 am -1 pm I kept trying to argue my refund & they insisted it would not occur because they notified me via e-mail that these charges would be made (to the e-mail address they told me to delete) & that because I created the account online (I ordered over phone), that I was notified there as well. I called back so many times & kept getting transferred, put on hold for so long that my phone battery died, & got hung up on too many times to count, that I was disgusted! I have NEVER, in all my years of ordering books for professors & myself, had this poor service. I lost well over $300 on this book originally priced at $60 (used) & they damaged my credit by depleting my account without direct notification to me as well as my making payments to other items assuming I had the money in my account but they charged it so I owed below balance bank charges, but they also cost me extra cell phone fees for not providing me with proper assistance. Worse still, they angered me like no other company ever has. I work customer service. I would never dismiss an unsatisfied customer, as they did me! I recommend everyone avoid Barnes & Noble. There is a reason they are losing money as a company; they are awful!
