The fine female specimen who runs the shop snatched a magazine out of my hand while I was browsing, accusing me of hiding and reading it. I was actually standing to the side of a corner of the magazine section because I wanted to get out of the way of other customers who were also browsing.
This poor misguided creature said there was to be no reading in the store.
I proceeded to buy a 10 trip multirider from the poor little girl manning the cash register. I left the shop. Came back later into the store because my bus was still a while away, and it was cold outside. I started reading my own book there in front of her to see her reaction. She told me not to read in the store. I said that it was cold, even addressing her respectfully, "Auntie" in the conventional Asian manner. I left.
I have never bought anything from that store again.
Apparently my experience is not isolated. This incident still incenses me today. I was gratified to discover this entry on a person's blog about a similar experience.

I just pity the child, presumably her daughter, because she has a mother like that, and times must be hard for a business run in this manner. I admit, though, that my feelings tend towards relief that she must soon go out of business. Karma, milady.
